Exhaust fumes of diesel driven vehicles are a complex mixture of noxious gases and diesel particulate matter (DPM). In 1988 the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommended that diesel exhaust emissions be regarded as a “potential occupational carcinogen”, and stated that reductions in workplace exposure would reduce cancer risks.
