UPSHUR COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) — Saturday marks the 15th anniversary of the Sago mine disaster.
An early morning explosion at the mine trapped 13 miners for nearly two days in 2006, leaving only one survivor. It was one of the country’s worst mining disasters until the Upper Big Branch explosion in 2010.
U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., who was the state’s governor at the time, released a statement Friday ahead of the anniversary.
