UPDATE: The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the worker injured in Saturday’s train car derailment has died. The man’s identity was not given.

ORIGINAL STORY CONTINUES:

A 46-year-old man was critically injured Saturday morning when a railroad car derailed from the tracks on the South Side at 9:25 a.m., according to a spokesman for the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

The injured person was working at Superior Silica Sands near the 24000 block of Pleasanton Road when the incident occurred, according to Deputy Johnny Garcia, BCSO spokesman.

The worker had unhitched the car from the train and that’s when the railcar began to roll off. The man tried to jump onto it but slipped off and was run over it, according to Garcia. The worker is described as have suffered “massive trauma.”

He was airlifted to University Hospital in critical condition, Garcia said.
