Electrician dies after apparent electrical shock at Kanawha County mine

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) — An electrician has died from injuries received early Tuesday morning from an apparent electrical shock at a Kanawha County mine, state officials said.

Steven Vernon Keeney, 40, of Sylvester died from injuries sustained about 12:20 a.m. from an incident at the Panther Creek Mining LLC, American Eagle Mine, according to a news release from the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training.

Keeney was a certified electrician at the mine.

The Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training continues to investigate the incident.

Gov. Jim Justice’s office issued a statement from the governor and first lady, Cathy Justice, expressing sadness over the death.

“Our brave mine electricians are right there underground with our coal miners every day, doing courageous and important work that allows us to keep the lights on across the entire country,” the statement said. “Today, we are heartbroken for the loss of one of these heroes: Steven Keeney. Cathy and I ask everyone to join us in praying for his family, friends, and the entire West Virginia mining community.”
