Name released after fatal mine accident in Raleigh County

RALEIGH COUNTY, W. Va. — One person has died following a mining accident in Raleigh County on Wednesday, February 21, 2018.

The Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training said the accident happened around 5:45 p.m. at Devil’s Fork 2 Highwall Mine in Raleigh County.

Officials said James A. Whitlock, 38, of Smithers, WV, died while performing electrical work. They said Whitlock was a highwall miner operator for Bundy Auger Mining, Inc.

The incident is still under investigation by the Office of Miners’ Health, Safety & Training.

Governor Jim Justice (R-WV) issued the following statement regarding the death of Mr. Whitlock.

“West Virginia has lost another one of our dedicated coal miners. We were heartbroken when we heard the news and encourage everyone to join us in praying for the family, friends and co-workers of James A. Whitlock of Smithers. Our mining community is a close-knit group and we know they have come together in this most difficult time.”
