Orthopaedic Surgeons Offer Tips for Staying Safe on the Slopes
January 8, 2014
Rosemont, IL – The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons is reminding people to follow safe practices while engaging in winter sports such as skiing and ice skating.
More than 310,000 people received medical treatment in 2012 for injuries related to sledding, snowboarding, skiing and ice skating, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Typical injuries include sprains, strains and fractures, which AAOS states can be prevented by staying in good physical condition, being alert and stopping when you are tired or feel pain.
Other tips include:
- Wear appropriate protective gear such as goggles, helmets, gloves and padding.
- Bring someone with you, and let someone at home know about your plans and whereabouts.
- Check the weather report before heading out.
- Wear several layers of loose, light, and water- and wind-resistant clothing.
- Warm up before playing to help avoid injuries to cold muscles.
- Have your cell phone nearby in case of emergency.
- Follow rules of the sport and take lessons for skiing and snowboarding.
Thanks for the share, NSC!
