It’s so easy to think someone should have known better or done differently based on “common sense,” but common sense isn’t necessarily common to all. As a matter of fact, it’s so rare that it could sometimes be considered a superpower. Recognizing this means we can’t take it for granted that people should know what we know. It means we need to review the details with everyone to ensure a common understanding. We must presume that everyone needs to know BEFORE allowing the job or task to begin. By the way, we don’t need common sense for effective safe work behaviors anyway; we need pre-planning, communication, action, and follow-up.
Remember, we can’t take incidents/injuries back so we need to do everything we can to prevent them up front. In short, we have to choose safety first, last, and always.
