CHECK OUT NUMBER 13! That’s the silver bullet, the magic pixie dust, the secret ingredient, or whatever else we’d care to label this rare character trait. LEADERS CARE! Of all “13 Inspiring Traits of an Effective Leader” number 13 is the most important. Without caring we cannot effectively demonstrate and/or practice the other 12 traits with any level of consistency. We can’t fake caring either; sure we can try, but trust me, it doesn’t work well or for long.
As safety leaders we have to care when people get hurt. Let’s face it, we don’t plan for injuries; so it’s safe to say that some type of failure has to take place to enable an injury to occur. It’s one of three things: 1) Unsafe Condition, 2) Unsafe Act, or 3) Act of God. WE CAN STOP UNSAFE CONDITIONS AND UNSAFE ACTS and that would prevent greater than 95% of all injuries.
By the way, I care about you and I certainly hope the feeling is mutual. In fact, you can count on me to work safely and I certainly hope I can have the same in return. It’s this trust that enables perfect safety performance. (ZERO INJURIES)
