Stay safe during National Great Outdoors Month (June)
Steer clear of ticks and mosquitos
Enjoying the outdoors is one of the best parts of spring and summer – bug bites and potential illnesses are not. Preventing insect bites reduces your risk for Lyme disease, West Nile Virus, and other diseases carried by ticks and mosquitos.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends mosquito repellants containing active ingredients registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

What to know before your next hike
New York state offers some of the most incredible hiking in the country. Whether you’re in the Adirondacks, Catskill Mountains, or your favorite local trail, being prepared will ensure you’ll have a memorable experience.
Before you hit the woods:
• Arrange to go with a group or at least one other person
• Choose trails within your ability
• Know when the sun sets so you can return before dark
• Wear waterproof, sturdy shoes or boots
• And tell someone of your travel and return plans
