Click here for an OSHA Fact Sheet on generator safety. It discusses GFCI. Notice that it states that the generator has to be grounded. The instructions for doing so can be found through the manufacturer.
Also, if a man is working in a hole, I would think that one might think about ventilation while the generator is operating. The worker could be overcome by fumes from the running engine.
