Worker killed after piece of equipment strikes him in the head at Draper rock quarry
By Paighten Harkins
A man was killed Wednesday at a Draper rock quarry when he attempted to dislodge a stuck piece of equipment and it struck him in the head.
Lee Mackay, 57, was trying to move a chute at the Geneva Rock Product facility in Draper, 15547 Minuteman Drive, about 1 p.m., when he was hit by the chute, Draper police Sgt. Chad Carpenter said.
Mackay had been working for the company for more than 15 years, Geneva Rock spokesman Dave Kallas told The Salt Lake Tribune.
Carpenter said the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration will investigate the man’s death.
The company sells concrete, sand, gravel and asphalt and does construction. The Utah-based company has facilities across the northern and central parts of the state, according to its website.
Officials shut down the quarry for the rest of the day Wednesday. Work will resume Thursday, Kallas said.
