ELKINS, W.Va. – A man has died after an accident at a Randolph County coal mine.

A man was struck in the head at the Morgan Camp Mine at approximately 12:20 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety, and Training.

Ronald R. Taylor, 43, of Belington, W.Va., was injured during the incident and flown from the mine to Ruby Memorial Hospital, WVOMHST officials said.

Taylor was pronounced deceased during the evening hours Tuesday due to head injuries he sustained in the incident, officials said.

Preliminary information indicates the injuries occurred when the mantrip on which he was riding struck a steel object in the roadway.

Taylor was a shuttle car operator at the mine.

The initial call was reported as a medical issue, 911 officials said.

Governor Jim and First Lady Cathy Justice issued the following statement today:

“West Virginia has lost one of our coal miners and we are deeply saddened and heartbroken upon learning the news. Please join us as we pray for all of the family, friends and loved ones of Ronald R. Taylor of Belington.”

Randolph County EMS and the Huttonsville, Mill Creek and Pickens Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the scene.

Inspectors from the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training are investigating.
