Why do we lock out equipment BEFORE we work on or in it? That’s a seemingly simple question to most of us, but do some people really know the answer? I’ve heard answers like, “my boss said so”, “it’s required”, “because everyone has to”, or perhaps even “the policy says to,” but that’s not the most right answer. We lock out because that enable us (the individual) to have and retain personal control of the energy(s) that could harm us if accidentally re-energized during the task. We use our own personal lock with our own personal key to manage our own personal safety. Don’t let anyone tell you differently; in fact, we lock out for ourselves and for our families!
Lock out is one of our serious six violations, because violators don’t always get a second chance.
No Safety – Know Injuries OR Know Safety – No Injuries!
Thanks for the share, PT!
