The caller reported a problem in a rock crusher suspended above the quarry.
Aerial footage showed an ambulance and numerous other emergency vehicles at the scene.
While the district attorney’s office did not immediately give any further details about the nature of the incident, it said the worker was pronounced dead at the scene of what they called apparent industrial accident.
The victim’s identity is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin, authorities said.
The Mine Safety and Health Administration, a division of the U.S. Department of Labor, said in a statement that it is investigating the incident. Their initial incident report lists the mine controller as Holcim Limited, and said the material being mined was “Crushed Broken Taprock.”
“The Mine Safety and Health Administration is conducting an ongoing investigation,” the statement said. “MSHA’s immediate priority in these situations is to ensure miners are safe while the mine operator addresses any hazards that may exist. Once the agency determines all miners are safe, their role is to review and approve the operator’s plans to further mitigate the hazards associated with the incident.”
