A cubic yard (3 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft) contains 27 cubic feet and can weigh up to 3000 pounds. That's one and a half tons of material in a space less than the size of the average office desk. One and a half tons is the same weight as a mid-sized car. Not much material - volume-wise - is needed to crush or suffocate a worker when they are partially or totally buried in a sliding material or trenching accident.
