40 Point Explanation
Pressure is stored energy that can be released intentionally or accidentally. If heat elevates the temperature of a liquid in a partially-filled, sealed container to it's boiling point, pressure can increase significantly because gases take much greater volumes than the liquids. In addition, if the temperature continues to climb above the boiling point the pressure will continue to increase as well. Flammable liquids will reach even higher pressures if ignition of the gas takes place. The pressure in gas pressure vessels (cylinders for example) increases with temperature. (Doubling the absolute temperature doubles the pressure in the cylinder. Note – “Absolute temperature in degrees F” equals “459.67 + temperature in degrees F”.) Because they can be compressed, gases under pressure store much more energy than compressed liquids.
