If you work outside, do so safely and know your body’s limits. Some tips to keep in mind include:

  • Always wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 – no matter how long you plan on being outside.
  • Take a water break every 15 minutes.
  • Wear UV-absorbent sunglasses.
  • Eat small, light meals before outdoor activities.

Overexertion

Overexertion accounts for about 3.3 million emergency department visits every year in the United States, and symptoms can be heightened in the heat. Stop and take a break if you experience any of the following:

  • Dizziness
  • Sore muscles
  • An unusually high pulse
  • Profuse sweating
  • Feeling very hot
  • Lower abdominal pain
