Fatal #11 – Fall of Highwall – S -Virginia
Preliminary: On October 11, 2018, a 26 year-old-year laborer (victim) with 48 weeks experience was standing on top of a freshly cut block of granite (approximately 20-feet tall by 35-feet wide by 4-feet thick and weighing an estimated 150 tons) along the south facing high wall between the top and first level of the quarry. As water was being applied to the bladders between the rock and high wall to move the rock, the block slid out at the bottom causing the miner to lose his balance and fall between the block and the high wall causing fatal injuries.
