FYI. Sorry that the news that I got below is in Swedish but click here for the English translation. It is about the EU’s decision to provide huge funding to HYBRIT project where LKAB, SSAB (a major Swedish steel company) and Vattenfall (a major Swedish electric power supplier) are investigating to replace coking coal with hydrogen in steelmaking process. The EU commission and Swedish government are currently very generous in providing funding for mining & metallurgy projects that are looking to reduce carbon emission. Beside HYBRIT, other projects that are getting this kind of funding are my project (NEXGEN SIMS), LKAB’s Sustainable Underground Mining (SUM), Boliden’s Aitik mine electric trolley truck, and Boliden’s integration between BEVs and overhead trolley in Kristineberg mine. These projects are run by mining companies and OEMs but universities are involved to assist them and therefore get some slices of the cakes. I’ve never seen so much government funding like this in Australia and the US. It is great to see taxpayers’ money used for this purpose.
